18th Birthday, Islander Style

Tonight Dan and I went to an 18th birthday party for Carmen, a young woman in our ward.  Her mom is from the Phillipines and her dad is from Saipan.  Traditionally in the Phillipines, the 18th bday party is a big deal for women.  Not only does it celebrate their adulthood, but the party is a way to introduce them into courtship and marriage.  Sister Sablan wanted this for her daughters.  Bishop Sablan said, "Well, she can get married, but after her mission."  :)

Entertainment to a delicious sit down dinner
Carmen, the birthday girl.  So beautiful in her traditional dress.  Love it.

Dancing for all afterward!
I am the only one that looks extremely under-dressed.
I now know what "semi-formal" means.  How embarrassing.  :(

I want to be an islander!!!!
